Bob Pickett reviews the Bering Portland Jacket

You'd think he'd be more cheeful owning such a good jacket French clothing experts Bering provide the kit for the bike and camera crews that cover the Tour de France - and we all know how changeable the conditions can be there!

The Portland jacket made from a fibretech material, reinforced at shoulder and elbows. It features four waterproof outer pockets and two adjustable waist bands. Just tucked away inside the windproof zip cover is a handy wallet/map pocket (so no need to open the jacket and expose yourself to the weather), and there is another wallet sized pocket, along with a mobile phone pouch.

To protect your bike from scratches, all buttons are rubber-coated. It also has removeable anatomic protectors (it says here) and back protector and a double collar integrated in the removeable thermal lining.

It is 100% waterproof due to the PVC coating - I've been in torrential downpours and not a drop has got hrrough.

It is warm as well - even with the thermal lining removed, with a long sleeved shirt I've kept warm, with the insert, well, inserted, I have been out on painfully cold days and had no idea that the weather was anything but pleasant.

The jacket features reflective strips (3M Scotchlite) which are thin buut extremely effective, throwing up more than enough light to make the dumbest road user aware of your presence.

If there is a downside, it is that the sleeves are a bit on the short side - they work well with a pair of Bering's own gloves though. And the jacket seems to have a real talent for acting like a sail in strong winds - not ideal at motorway speeds.

Verdict:

But overall this is an excellent three season jacket - for Summer you'd want something lighter. But if you are looking for a waterproof jacket that keeps out the cold as well, you can't go far wrong.
