Rock Oil Chain Wax - Bob Pickett looks after his chain with this top-notch product

Rock Oil Chain Wax... on a rock... OK it is an appalling pun, but the product is superb Lubing your chain - boring, something you really don't like doing… but essential. There are sprays, oils, gels and waxes. All have their own positive and negative points, but at the end of the day, they all do the same job. So how to choose the best one for your bike?

After the obvious (like is this lube one that is made for my type of chain), there are three things to consider when choosing a chain lube;

1. How messy is it to apply? Does it fling all over the back tyre? 2. How long does it last? Are you going to have to re-apply after just short runs? 3. How smooth are your gear changes for the life of that application?

I've tried a lot of different lubes over the years - and I reckon the best one I've ever found is Rock Oil Chain Wax. This is the first chain lube I've used that honestly satisfies all of the above criteria.

The pressure in the can is just right to put the wax onto the chain without any mess whatsoever, unlike other products I've tried where I've had to spend ages with kitchen towel removing as much of it from the tyre as I've put on the chain!

The first application of a new lube is always the one where I give it a real test - in other words, I run with it until my gear changes stop being slick. And the first application of Rock Oil lasted for the best part of 500 miles before my normal problem area of back into neutral at stop became an issue.

(I wouldn't recommend running for this kind of distance all the time - always best to lube before the maximum effectiveness wears off)

And in all those miles, changing gear was slick, smooth and easy.

Verdict

Excellent product - short of fitting a chain oiler, this is as good as it comes in the chain lube stakes.
