Schuberth C2 flip-up helmet - why has this had Gerry Page flipping his lid… for all the wrong reasons? Read on and find out.
I commute 100 miles a day from Cambridge to London, so need a helmet that is quiet on the motorway grind, allows me to open it right up in commuter-heavy town traffic, keeps out the cold in Winter and help me to get cooling air to my head in Summer.
A flip-top helmet is ideal for the task. So when I needed a new helmet, I went for the Schuberth C2. It is much quieter than my Nolan flip helmet. It feels snug, at first a little claustrophobic but I got used to that after a while. It keeps the cold out very well, useful when you are on the motorway for a lot of Winter miles. In traffic the fact that you can pull the visor forward a few millimeters (either one side or both together) ideals with any misting at all, also the chin vent is very effective, as is the vent on the top of the helmet. The Internal sun visor is excellent - there just when you want it, easy to bring it down and take it up again. That's all the good news, now the bad is that I do find it a bit of a struggle to pull down over my ears and taking it off I have to check if any of my ears have been left inside! Verdict: A comfortable, substantially well built and above average flip up helmet that whilst not perfect, would recommend and buy again myself. POSTSCRIPT TO THE ORIGINAL REVIEW:I had to send it back to be inspected, as the vent slider was not sealing properly. Depending on the position of my head there was a continuous drone rather like a really loud fly buzzing. The dealers sent the helmet back to UK importers Oxford Products - and from there it was sent to Germany for inspection and repair. Six weeks later, it returned, supposedly fixed. However the internal sun visor mechanism had not been re-assembled correctly, meaning the sun visor was hanging down lopsidedly and could not be retracted. I rejected the helmet as not fit for purpose and got my money back. I emailed Schuberth in Germany three times expressing my concern about the initial problem and the lack of quality control. Schuberth have ignored all my emails. (Editorial note from Motobke.co.uk - we feel we should point out that this is the experience of one individual and clearly a lot of people buy this helmet without suffering any problems… or it wouldn't still be on shop shelves. But the lack of response from Schuberth is disappointing to say the least as is the helmet returning from having one problem sorted… only to come back with another one. If anyone from Schuberth is reads this - please contact us (our email address is shown on the "Be a writer/About Us" page) and we will happily pass on your comments to Gerry/publish a response in this review as applicable) Got a great piece of kit?
