Bob Pickett learns how to corner with a little technology from California
Nailing a corner perfectly is one hell of a feeling, but how do you do it? This is where
the Twist of the Wrist DVD by Keith Code comes in.
Code is famous for his techniques and has written a series of books on the subject and this
DVD (it is also available on video) translates them to the screen. The DVD has two options;
the full version and the non-humorous. I take my cornering seriously, so I went straight
onto the more serious one.
What Code does is simple. He breaks down the elements of cornering, taking them one at a time and analysing how they work. Each section shows the options available to you, with the pros and cons of each. To reinforce the concepts being discussed, footage of riders trying the various options is shown, detailing the effects of your choices. Did I say simple? Well maybe it is, but it is also very effective. Have you ever given the slightest consideration to how much of your concentration is needed to corner effectively? Or actually taking the time to PRACTICE a corner you know well? By reducing the entire science of cornering to it's smallest elements, Code allows you to work on the art by one tiny piece at a time, before putting it all together into one effective package. The pictures are rather out of date in terms of bikes and hairstyles, but at the end of the day a bike is a bike, a rider is a rider and the same mistakes are made no matter what the decade. Verdict: The DVD format avoids a lot of the Californian psych-babble that is a common complaint about Code's books. Distilling years of experience into a couple of hours is a big ask, but this DVD does a good job of putting over Code's theories. Some of the attempts at humour, even in the so-called non-humorous version can grate on the nerves, but dismiss these and concentrate on the message being put over and there is a lot to be gained from watching this DVD. At the end of the day, nothing will replace riding your bike. Theory has to be translated into practice. But this DVD points you in the right direction and gives you a lot to think about.
